Was Socrates Wise? Webster defines wise as: (1) having or showing good judgment; (2) informed; (3) learned; (4) shrewd or cunning. In my opinion, Socrates was wise in all aspects of the word. If I were placed in his position and were to make the same decisions, I would not consider myself wise. I would consider myself to be a great fool, but given the circumstances and the parties involved I believe that Socrates made proper decisions in his defense. Socrates knew that the jury was prejudiced against him from the start and addressed it immediately. In his opening statement, of the prosecutors he stated, but of their many falsehoods, the one which astonished me most was when they said that I was a clever speaker, and that you†¦show more content†¦He did not feel that he was even slightly wise let alone the wisest man. He tried to prove the oracle wrong by examining reputedly wise men and he realized that they thought that they knew things that they did not and this made them unwise. It wa s after these encounters that Socrates realized that the oracle meant that human wisdom is worth little or nothing.(19) It was this realization that made Socrates wise. Socrates knew that he would be convicted and sentenced to death, so his speech on death was not foolish. He was just addressing the inevitable. He says that a man of any worth does not think of life and death or of anything except whether he is acting as a good or bad man. Socrates does not fear death, for no one knows whether death may not be the greatest good that can happen to man. But men fear it as if they knew quite well that it was the greatest of evils.(24) Socrates was borderline foolish when he discussed his political career and how he was ill suited for it because was just and made his decisions accordingly. This was a thinly veiled allusion to the moral character of the politicians of Greece, which must have been insulting and would not help acquit him. After Socrates was found guilty, he accepted the death penalty by insulting the jury again. In the United States there have been many deaths due to alcohol. If it were not for the lack of education of alcohol abuse, many of the accidents could be prevented. The U.S’s biggest problem that Americans are facing is underage drinking. In our society we see many young teenagers that begin to drink at an early age of 10. They want to experience it without knowing the health risk factors that are associated with alcohol. There are many problems occurring because of alcohol abuse. In America the misuse of alcohol causes many teenagers to experience alcohol poisoning, alcohol dependency in the long run, and accidents. Motion extremes, repetitive increase of loads, and muscle load in a disorganised manner during propulsion of wheelchair causes several kinds of injuries to the upper-limbs (Cooper et al. 2001). So pain, one of the crucial factors in functioning of our day-to-day life, is an intricate problem generally faced by any wheelchair user. One of the driving forces in resisting the propulsion of wheelchair is none other than that of the rolling resistance which exerts its pressure upon the upper limbs. So there was a craze among researchers to investigate the necessary requirements like expenditure of energy, propulsion efficiency, and the variances in rolling resistance during power assisted and manual propulsion by the user. For the said purpose, Pavlidou et al. (2015) conducted a study that was solely based on difference in tire pressure and different levels of motor assistance. Drag force, expenditure of energy and efficiency of propulsion were also measured in that study in a treadmill under several experimental conditions. Results of their study revealed significant higher drag force level in half inflation condition as compared to more or full inflation condition and the value of drag force in case of power assisted wheelchair was significantly higher when compared to that of the manually driven one. In a case w hen the propulsion efficiency and the required energy expenses by the user is concerned, the acclimatization of extra-power-assisted wheelchair appeared to be significantly higher than that of the manual and conventional power-assisted wheelchairs. So Pavlidou et al. (2015) concluded that depending on the supplied motor assistance, the habituation of wheelchair driven by power was more effective because of consuming less energy input by the user. But, it becomes difficult on the part of the trainer or the therapist to design customized seating for the impaired individuals in case of power wheelchair since it might be the case that the wheelchair can be used for several individuals. Thus taking into consideration the above aspects, the concept of Turtle Trainer was developed and it was presented at the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA) conference. This concept was developed in order to convert the manual wheelchair into a power wheelchair and the development was made in order enhance the ability of the individuals to make an efficient use of the power mobility. The device that was developed was described by Bresler, (1990) as motorized cart that has been characterized with wheelchair tied owns and it also consists of a ramp that facilitates in the loading and unloading of a manual wheelchair. Since then, there have been several developments in the wheelchair and it has been characterized with several types of controllers that include the push button, joystick, sip and puff controllers, head array and push button and these controllers are widely used in the wheelchairs for individuals suffering from different type of injuries (Livingstone, 2010). However, these controllers also suffers from limitations like it has been generally accepted that except the sip and puff controller, the other controllers assume the patient to be characterized with reliable mobility in their body. Again, the advancements that have taken place in the microprocessors have led to several innovations in context to control interfaces of the power wheelchair together with several areas of the assistive technology. Thus in addition to the common interfaces that include the chin and head controls, sip and puff controls, the power wheelchairs have been characterized with various control schemes that include eye gazing systems and the tongue touch pads (Hildebrand et al., 2014). Thus looking at the developments that have taken place in the present day in power wheelchairs, there still exists some shortcomings like the individuals suffering from multiple and severe disabilities may find it difficult to steer the power wheelchair in a particular setting that has limited space. Moreover, with rapid advancements in technology, segway technology emerged as a new cutting edge that is characterized with key spawning marvelous concepts that includes the iBot wheelchair possessing the ability of climbing the stairs and it can also raise the individual to a certain standard height that is equal to height of the individual when he is standing (Bayer et al., 2007). The developments also had made it easy on the part of the individuals suffering from severe motor disability to mobilize and carry out their day to day activities in a much efficient manner. Interventions of wheel Chair According to concept of World Health Organization, in world population about 10 % to 15% of people are disabled and they require wheelchair. Mobility assistance is accessed approximately 20 million in the world. According to Bray et al. 2014, there is inadequate wheelchair mobility service which is needed to be organized for disabled people. For assistive mobility technology because of poverty level, disabled people are deprived from buying the wheelchairs which are cost effective. As per United Nations, disabled people are assisted with mobile technology, so that they do not face any trouble in walking. In worldwide about 5% of children is disabled, each people needs to view on economic impact. There are various kinds of wheel chair. There are children who is patient of cerebral palsy, they need specialised seating and or them those wheelchairs are needed to be arranged which has mobility and which are assisted with technology. There are some policies which are adopted by World Health Organization and United Kingdom and as per those policies; exclusion limit should be handled by the appropriate wheel chair intervention method. NHS Wheelchair Service for the Children who are Disabled It is estimated that, there are 770,000 children and young people who are under 16 years old lives in UK. According to NHS, it is necessary that, evidence and effectiveness are evaluated with wheelchair intervention procedures. Range of positive impacts is needed to be developed with global understanding. Specific role is played by health economists to develop the wheelchair services. According to Brey et al, 2014 in BMC Heath Service Research mentioned about the social theories with positive approach in disability management are needed to be treated with conceptual framework from the evidence which synthesize the diverse evidence. By careful usage of research material, the guidelines provide the most appropriate recommendations for advising the best wheelchair of a person. The guidelines were made for the following individuals to use- Professional physiotherapists and therapists who give prescription for wheelchairs for patients with brain and spinal cord injury. Rehabilitation engineers who are equipped with the special knowledge regarding advice of wheelchairs. Source and Method of Recommendations The recommendations have been made on the basis of evidentiary value. These evidences have been ranked on the basis of well tested criteria. The guidelines were created by regular updating applicable research literature which were published during the year of 1999 and the month of August, 2010. From the research literature, the material that was derived was checked for authenticity and meticulously analysed by two organisations. These analytical data was derived from Levels for the strength of evidence (levels I-IV) of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and the method of ranking of recommendations given for the guidelines (Hillier et al., 2011). The research literature contained studies and reviews of the experiences and viewpoints of the users of wheelchairs. Various cases were studied on quality basis in order to make the evidentiary value of the research more strong. While introducing the therapy to the patient, the practitioner must keep in mind various principles of ethics. According to S. Taylor (2005), these ethics can be applied in matters of taking decision (Taylor, 2005). Certain principles can be like- Respecting the individuality and autonomous character of the client. This involves their choice, personality, independence of will and secrecy kept for the client and his/her helping attendant. The psychotherapist or the therapist is supposed to act or perform which is supposed to be consonance with the good of others and should be in an effort to bring wellbeing of the client. By ensuring care and diligent approach, the therapist should try to curb problems and harm to the client. The effort of the therapist should be justifiable and fair in nature. Hence from the above discussions it can be derived that United Nations has devised a programme or unit which takes care of disabled and their rights to take decisions. There are certain guidelines prepared for the purpose of providing therapeutic solutions and interventions to people with severe mental traumatic conditions and with spinal cord injuries. These guidelines are based on well researched literature prepared on careful evidencing. Reclining Wheelchairs As stated by Sabol, and Haley, (2006), the most common use of Reclining wheelchairs is found in Taiwan for movement of patients impacted by stroke. The statistics report related with Reclining wheelchairs state that almost 66.4% of wheelchair prescription at the technology centre was accounted from 2007 to 2009 for this specialized wheelchair. Why did the League of Nations fail to keep international peace in the 1930s? Joel Surdhar The League of Nations was created to avoid international conflicts and maintain peace throughout the world, however the league of nations was not quite as successful as it intended. One of the main reasons why the League of nations was considered to be a failure was the Manchurian Crisis. The Manchurian Crisis was the invasion of a country in southern China, Manchuria, which was invaded by the Japanese. The Japanese were economically depressed due to the great depression ecause no one was rich enough to purchase their silk which was their main export. They felt the only way to recover their economy was territorial conquest. The Japanese were interested in Manchuria because China was particularly weak at the time due to civil conflicts. Manchuria was also close to Japan and was rich in coal and iron which were the key recourses which Japan lacked therefore it was an ideal target for Japan to invade. China sent an ppeal to the League of Nations and the Japanese promised a withdrawal, however they stood their ground as they realised that the League of Nations had little power. It was a key moment in which the League of Nations was needed when the Chinese appeal but they remained powerless to the situation. The League of Nations had little military empowerment over Japan, as it was extremely hard to transfer their army across the world. Another problem which the Europeans faced was that they could not deny trade with Japanese because they knew the Americans would trade with the Japanese instead because US did not Join the League of Nations. The greater powers of Europe, France and Britain were afraid of attacking making an aggressive approach toward Japan because it way threaten their Far Eastern Colonies such as Singapore or Hong Kong. In response, the League of Nations sent Lord Lytton to take a report and analysis of the situation. 18 months later Lord Lytton returned and confirmed that the Japanese invasion was not Justified. In 1933 in the League Assembly a vote was hold gainst Japans actions and the result was 42 to 1 against Japan and Japan simply left the League. The League of Nations were too late and the Japanese had already secured Manchuria. Therefore the League of Nation had failed to resolve this particular conflict due to a lack of power and perhaps could have supressed Japans economy if the US was part of the League of Nations and then Japan would have no one to trade with and would be forced to withdraw the invasion. Another Key problem that the League of Nations faced was the conflict of Abyssinia. Abyssinia was a poor country in North-East Africa and it was one of the few areas of Africa not under European control. The itallians tried to conquer Abyssinia in 1896 but failed in the battle of Adowa. Mussolini, the itallian dictator was keen for revenge and plotted to take Abyssinias mineral resources and fertile land. This was against the friendship treaty of Italy and abyssinia signed in 1928. The League of Nations was anxious to avoid a clusn b e tween taly and abyssinia because France and Brittan elieved Mussolini was the strongest ally they had against the threat of Hitler, however Mussolini hoped the League of Nations would let him do what he wanted in Abyssinia. Italy later attacked Abyssinia in October 1935 and it was a clear win for Italy as they had much more advanced weapons than the poor country of Abyssinia. The League of Nations had to respond to this attack, as it was unprovoked invasion. The League of Nations banned the sale of arms and goods to Italy, however they did not ban oil exports as they were again fearful that the US would sell to Italy instead. France and Brittan owned the seuz canal which was a very important route from Italy to Abyssinia, but the canal was not closed because France and Brittan did not want to provoke a full scale war with Italy. Instead the British and French governments created a secret deal. This was called the Hoare-Laval Pact, the deal was that Italy would get 2/3 of Abyssinia if they stopped the war. Mussolini said he would accept this deal, however the deal was leaked to the French press which caused public uproars and protests, forcing Hoare and Laval to resign. The Italy was very offended nd left the League and became an ally of hitler, making the conflict of abyssinia very unsuccessfully handled by the League of Nations. In conclusion the League of Nations failed to keep peace because of not having enough authority and global power such as in Eastern Europe. The League of Nations could have possibly been more successful had the US Joined, which would give the League more power, authority and global presence. The League of Nations had also been severely damaged by the Hoare-Laval pact and lacked respect and authority from countries.
